Love Anyway….

What is love anyway?  Is it loving people only when you ‘approve’ of them?  Is it Love when they have ‘proper’ behavior?  Is it Love when they choose a different direction?  Can we Love when they disrespect, rebel, or are hurtful?  Can we love them ‘anyway’?
Relations can be hard, and as a parent, I think that is the hardest job out there.  It has the most joy, greatest heartache, the lowest lows and the highest highs.
I had a special friend message me and ask about some of the things I have encountered.  I shared openly with her about some of our trials, things we have faced as parents.  She is having a painful issue in their family with a child and she asked my thoughts or advice. Certainly I don’t have all the answers and have made plenty of mistakes. All I really  had to share with her is this – Love them. Love them anyway….. ‘even if…..”.

Even if:
  • You don’t agree
  • You don’t understand
  • You believe it is wrong
Sometimes it may mean you have to use ‘tough Love’, remember the key is the Love. We can agree to disagree.  We can love the child/person, but not the behavior.  There is a difference. Sometimes it is hard to this, but we can do it.
Our biggest role model is Jesus.  He took His love to the very end.  He cares about us, created us, and continues to Love us… no matter what. He Loves us anyway. Yes, we have to face the consequences of our choices, our actions, etc., but along the journey He is there.  He is here. He loves us.
Period. End of story.
So we in turn Love others, love through the hard times, and Love through the best times.
As Christians we are commanded to Love one another, not judge.

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.  Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.                I John 4:7-8

(One thing here, if you are in a harmful relationship, abuse, or other…Please get help.  In this case, LOVE yourself (and your kids) even to leave and get help.)

Many Blessings! ‘Til Next Time –

QUESTION:  Have you had a time when you had agree to disagree with a loved one  ?

TALK TO ME –  I’d love to hear from you!

Are you ready…?

Isn’t it great – CHRISTMAS!  I love this season of the year.  First and most importantly I love that we take this time to celebrate the birth of Jesus our Savior, Redeemer, Peace of Peace, Emmanuel.  I love the lights and decorations, I love the RED– it is so full of life and makes me smile.  I love to watch children’s eyes light up, to hear them giggle, and get excited.  Now of course, I do realize that not everyone loves Christmas. There are a lot of hurting people who have lost loved ones, who have painful memories, etc.    My heart goes out to them and I want to share the love of Jesus with them.  I want them to know that Jesus love can heal the hurts, His love can overcome all of the negativity, the meanness, and the pain. You are loved!

I had an interesting conversation with a friend today.  She is feeling a little stressed and gets offended when people ask “Are you ready for Christmas?”  Why you ask?  It makes her feel guilty, and like something is wrong with her because she still has things to do, etc.  As we talked about it I began to understand her feelings and we decided that having something different to say might be a good idea.

When someone asks ‘Are you ready for Christmas?  Here were a few of our thoughts that have nothing to do with shopping and buying.

  • YES – I love Christmas and all that goes with it (Only say it if you really mean it)

  • YES – I’ve been singing Christmas music for a month and feel in the spirit

  • YES – I have things to do, but I am ready for it.

  • YES – isn’t it a great time of year!

  • YES – my heart is ready, even though I have a few more things to do.

  • No – but I’m not worried about it.

  • No – I like to stretch it out ’til the end.

  • No – why rush I have plenty of time

  • No – but I am celebrating everyday

As with most things, it is how we look at it, how we choose to answer the questions and how we decide to react. I choose to share the joy.

Another little thing – when out shopping and doing errands, etc., when they say ‘Happy Holiday”  (because it is the politically correct thing to do)  I stop, look them in the eye, and with a big smile say “Merry Christmas”.  I want to be intentional in remembering what this season is all about.  It’s Christmas. It is Jesus. Period. End of story . . . Ha – actually, the beginning of the Story!

‘Til next time –

When asked the question, “What do you know that you know?   Down in your soul, your heart of hearts, what do  you know about yourself?”

My answer is I know that Jesus loves me, and I know I born to sing, to share His message joy and hope with the world.  Now what does ‘the world’  actually mean? The world, can be my brother and sister (I used to teach Sunday School in our garage), my backyard, church, community, whatever the ‘world’ turns into.  I am a singer.  I am a speaker.  I am a child of God. I am a Christian.  So whether it is singing a ‘Christian’ song that talks about Jesus, or a song at a birthday party, maybe an aria from an opera, I am a singer, I am a Christian.

I recently read a book by Jefferson Bethke called JESUS > Religion.  I mentioned him a few weeks ago and another one of things he talks about in his book is how the world is trying, and actually doing a good job of, is putting Christians in a box.  Here is the point.  Society says it’s OK to sing about Jesus if it is ‘Christian’ music, or it is ‘Christian Art’, like a picture of a cross or a church, if it’s in church or a ‘Christian’ concert.  It has labeled us and basically expects us to stay in our Christian box, does that make sense?  The world doesn’t want us to spill over into the other areas of the world.  Well, that is just nonsense.

We live in the world and walk in the world. We are here to be a light, to shine in the dark places, to share His love no matter where it is, grocery store, baseball game, restaurant, school, work, hospital, doctor’s office, wherever we go, even on the telephone with the phone or cable company. (I know that can a hard one 🙂

I have never liked being in box, told what I should and should not do, what is proper, what is not.  I believe I am to live the life I am called to, to sing and share Christ’s message of love and hope through music, the spoken word, my life.

One of the greatest compliments I have ever received was when someone close to me told me he never believed in Jesus because he has only felt judgement and meanness, until he knew me.  He could feel the love.  This humbled me beyond belief.  Oh that this was always true.

So Christians let’s just SPILL out the love of Jesus to everyone, let’s just drip it all over.  Let’s be open and accepting of each other, as children of God. We don’t have to preach it, Bible thump it, we just have to live it. I mean… after all, that is what Jesus did.

40 Days of Love … Kindness

LENT – I was raised in the Baptist Church, Southern Baptist, to be exact, and we never really talked about Lent, the 40 days of preparation, or ‘giving up’ something during that time.  I had friends that went to the Catholic Church, and they would always give up something during that time to focus on preparation and to take a little more time in prayer.  Somehow I just didn’t ‘get it’.

As I continue on my spiritual journey, I find I want to spend a little time and more focus during this time.  When I lived in Chicago my neighbor Susie and I went to a Non-Denom church where I grew more in understanding and decided to make some changes and decisions about what I’d like to do during this time.
So I decided to ‘give up’ something, but I also decided to follow an idea my friend Joy shared with me.  She ‘Gives’ something of herself each day of Lent.  I love that.  She does a random act of kindness each day.   So I decided to do ‘something special’,  a ‘kindness’, share a little of His love each day.  It may be to a stranger, friend , or family member, maybe write a card of encouragement or call someone I know needs a friend.  I pray God will move in my spirit and show me ways to do this.  Jesus took these 40 days and because of His love for us, he walked to the cross.  I want to think about that, remember that, and show a little more love to others.

Honestly, I have missed a few days, ALREADY, but I know that I am not condemned.  I will continue on, and I think I’ll add a day after Easter for each one I miss.  Ummmmm, maybe this is a habit that will continue throughout the year.  Right now, it’s forty days until Easter… plus the ones I add on.
Just thought I’d let you know.
‘Til next time

We may not all get along. . . But . . .

Here’s a comment my son made on FB, “We may not all get along . . . but, for the New Year, let’s AT LEAST try to stop killing one another….”  I think we can expand on that thought… stop hurting each other, judging each other. How about a little Peace.

Peace with each other… Peace in our families… Peace… in our churches, offices, work. Peace – No drama, fighting, judging, hurting.

We joke about it, as in movies and beauty pageants, where the actor says what they wish for is ‘World Peace” (think Miss Congeniality).

World peace seems like such an illusion, I think because we can’t seem to find peace in our daily lives.  It starts here, with me . . . with you.  Peace from the Prince of Peace – Jesus.  Sharing His love by loving each other, accepting each other.  We can agree… to disagree.  It begins with you… and it begins with me.

So here is my wish this year.  “‘Let There Be Peace on Earth’ and let it begin with me.”
