LENT – I was raised in the Baptist Church, Southern Baptist, to be exact, and we never really talked about Lent, the 40 days of preparation, or ‘giving up’ something during that time. I had friends that went to the Catholic Church, and they would always give up something during that time to focus on preparation and to take a little more time in prayer. Somehow I just didn’t ‘get it’.
As I continue on my spiritual journey, I find I want to spend a little time and more focus during this time. When I lived in Chicago my neighbor Susie and I went to a Non-Denom church where I grew more in understanding and decided to make some changes and decisions about what I’d like to do during this time.
So I decided to ‘give up’ something, but I also decided to follow an idea my friend Joy shared with me. She ‘Gives’ something of herself each day of Lent. I love that. She does a random act of kindness each day. So I decided to do ‘something special’, a ‘kindness’, share a little of His love each day. It may be to a stranger, friend , or family member, maybe write a card of encouragement or call someone I know needs a friend. I pray God will move in my spirit and show me ways to do this. Jesus took these 40 days and because of His love for us, he walked to the cross. I want to think about that, remember that, and show a little more love to others.
Honestly, I have missed a few days, ALREADY, but I know that I am not condemned. I will continue on, and I think I’ll add a day after Easter for each one I miss. Ummmmm, maybe this is a habit that will continue throughout the year. Right now, it’s forty days until Easter… plus the ones I add on.
Just thought I’d let you know.
‘Til next time
BLESSINGS!
