In the Dark. . .

Sometimes don’t you just have to laugh at yourself? In my process of being so organized, guess what I forgot?

My renters have just moved out of the house. We’ve known for a month that they were leaving so I have had plenty of time to take care of things. I’ve got meetings set up with a handyman, painter, landscapers, etc. Things are right on schedule, right?

NOT! I walked in to the house yesterday and wondered why it was so dark… Duh, I forgot to transfer the utilities.

I mean really, that should be right on the top of the list. So in case you have a move coming up, don’t be left in the dark (tee hee).

Contact

Electricity
Gas
Water
Cable / Direct TV, etc.
Phone (if you still have land line)
Post Office for address change (You can do this online for $1.05)
County records (if you are a homeowner or own other property)
Voter Registration (sometimes this will pop up when you change your address with Post office or County records)
All your vendors, credit cards, etc (I think this is my least favorite, trying to make sure I have them all covered)

Depending on where you are moving from or where you are moving to, you may need to have help with cleaning, yard clean up, inside things like painting repairs, and any changes you need or want to have done to the house. That’s what I am doing today, meeting people to take care of business, and then in a few weeks the actual move. It will be a month full of interesting situations. I just might have a story or two to tell when it’s over.

YIKES! Now it’s time to get to work! High heels off ……

1 – 2 – 3 Easy Move In

You may be moving to a house, apartment, or condo. No matter how big or small, you will have rooms and spaces. For instance, the bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry, garage, and maybe a loft, etc. Each room and/or space gets a number.

I like to start at the front and then number them in order as I walk through the house. You may want to start with garage as #1, or put it last. On my list I have also divided the garage into sections. I am leaving myself a lot of flexibility. Many of the boxes will go into the garage by number, so as I decide where I want to put things I can go to garage and get them, rather than stacking up in the house and moving them around several times (ex. books, decorating items, etc.) Also, having to ‘live’ with a bunch of boxes is overwhelming, so I put in the garage until I am ready for them.

As I pack, I mark each box on top with the corresponding number so the movers can it easily see it and then take box directly to each room.

Before the move in date each room/space in the house is marked with that number. I just take a piece of paper and a sharpie, mark the number, and tape it on the wall. saves a lot of ‘where does this go?’ questions.

On moving day, Bill or I will stand in front and tell them where to place even the furniture based on the room numbers.

Let’s face it, moving can be a hard time of stress, all the preparation and the actual packing while you are still trying to ‘do’ your life is a strain. Moving day has it’s own issues, and then there’s all the unpacking. If you can pre-plan, and maybe try a few of these tips, you may find it will make those steps a little bit easier. It helps me.

Countdown to Moving Day

Here we are again – another move – releasing more stuff – and loving it! I know – Crazy, huh?

If you have been following over the last month or so, you know we are re-locating here in Las Vegas. As I have begun the packing process I have taken a load of ‘stuff’ to my Mother in Phoenix, traveled to KC to deliver ‘stuff’ to my kids, and have made…. ummm, I think five trips to Goodwill. Along with that we have had two car leases that have reached term, and so have returned the cars. My life is getting lighter by the minute.

Sometimes when you move it is quick and you just do it the fastest way possible and get on with it. If on the other hand you have time, then you can plan and strategize about the best and most efficient way to handle it.

That is my case, and so I have begun. Each drawer, closet, or other area there are items to keep, giveaway, sell, or trash.

For the things that are ‘keep’ here are a few tips on Packing:

Mark boxes to ‘house’ or to ‘storage’

Label contents specifically (K-mixer/attach, large pans and mix bowls, etc)

Mark on outside of box in three places – On top and then mark on 2 adjacent sides (this is so when you stack them, depending on how they fit in the storage area or your garage, you can read the label and not have to open or re-arrange each time you go looking for something.) It takes a little more time but so worth it!

If you have room, as you pack your boxes take them to garage and keep in separate areas, those marked ‘storage’ and those marked ‘house’. This keeps your house from feeling so overwhelming with boxes stacked everywhere, and if you are selling your house and have showings, it shows much better without all the boxes inside the house.

Deliver boxes to storage, and any items that you know will be stored for a while

My goal is by the time I have access to the house, all the ‘storage’ things will be in storage, and the ‘house’ items will be ready to go to the house, and all that will be left is the furniture and big items on moving day.

More details later as the ‘Fun’ continues. Next time I’ll share about my numbering system. (Oh, and for those of you who are new to my blog, this is our 15th move in 35 years…. and we are still together =) The first 30 years were building and gathering. Now we are releasing, and it feels great.

Seeking out Smiles

Smiles make you feel good, right? But did you know they also can help relieve stress and can calm you?

I found this article in For Women First magazine and wanted to share with you. Shop owners in Japan found that by placing ‘Smiley faces’ on everything,(dishes, detergent, racks, even veggies) it made people relax and stay in the store longer. Pretty cool, huh?

Then in a study at Boston University they discovered that looking at upbeat messages and images produces alpha brain waves which trigger feelings of happy relaxation.

So when we Moms put a smiley face or happy message in our child’s lunch box, or send a note with a smile and positive greeting it really does make a difference.

Gosh, and we just thought it felt good. So there you go– Now there is research to prove it.

Come Together. . .

Drums, bells, organ, and singers were all making beautiful music.

Sunday afternoon was all about ‘GRACE’. A new church began. Two strong congregations in Las Vegas, First Presbyterian Church and Summerlin Presbyterian Church, came together and chartered as Grace Presbyterian Church. This reflected a few years of blending of congregations and sharing in ministry.

FPC came with a long heritage of faith and outreach in our community and Summerlin brought strong mission minded people flexible in worship and, well, lots of flexibility. SPC has been meeting in schools, and libraries, and a retail center. In order to survive we had to be flexible. As we come together we will be able to reach out more, be a stronger witness, and touch more lives for the Kingdom.

The service on Sunday was a blending of both. Strong praise music from the Worship Team, a bagpipe drum team, which was fabulous!!! There were gospel singers, a bell choir, large choir, wonderful organ music, and singing with the congregation. I was amazed.

As I sat there I thought about how this is the way it’s supposed to be. There isn’t only one way of doing things. There is good in it all. We were praising and worshipping all together. It didn’t matter what building or place we were in or what style of worship or music. The Word was proclaimed, we sang praises, and our hearts were touched.

It can’t get much better than that.

You can’t do it every Sunday, but it sure was great for the chartering of our new congregation. We are about Grace. God’s grace to us, and showing His Grace to others. We will all probably have to step out of our comfort zone a little . . . or maybe a lot, but God’s grace is sufficient for all of it.

OH – I am honored to be speaking to the women of Grace today at their first luncheon for the season. I am so excited.
