It’s About Time

I’ve been noticing that people tend to run late. How about you? Are you the one or do you know someone who is always late? The person that you know you are going to have to wait on to start the meeting, or order dinner, or a myriad of other things. It’s a little frustrating isn’t it?

.

Doctor and dentist offices, hair stylists, most business offices, know that many of their clients are going to run late, which bottles up everything. What about you? Are you the one that runs late, or do you show up on time?

.

We may think it doesn’t really make any difference, but that really isn’t true. Wherever we are going, someone has prepared for us. Maybe it is a class that the teacher or the leader has prepared and when we walk in late it is disruptive… and so inconsiderate.

.

I was in a training class a few years ago, and when the leader mentioned this I was shocked. I just never had thought about it before. Now I am sharing with you. Consider this. When we are late what we are saying, by our actions is, MY schedule is more important than yours, My time is more valuable than you, I AM more important than you. When I heard this… YIKES! I never intentionally said it, never really even thought those thoughts, but it is true.

It is a sign of disrespect, it’s inconsiderate, and rude. That may hurt today if you are the consistently late person. But you can change that habit. I used to be late, just never thought too much about it, but now I really strive to be prompt and on time. Yes, there are those things that truly are important and reasons that we might be late. But most of the time it is our lack of planning, our trying to do one more thing, our focus on ourselves and not others.

.

Take a look. What is your habit? Have you led a class or a meeting and had people walk in late? Have you been meeting someone and they show up late? Even if they text and tell you, it still is inconsiderate to leave you waiting. How did that make you feel? (BTW, texting to let someone know you are running late is nice, but still isn’t an excuse for being late in the first place.)

It’s Not Fair

.

Life is full of change – as a matter of fact, I think life IS change or it should be! The question is, how do you react when something changes? Do you get ruffled, upset, angry? Do you go down the road of It’s Not Fair? Or do you flex, take a deep breath and go with it? Often we think change is a bad thing… but it doesn’t have to be. Take a look at the picture above. I think it depends on how quickly you can move from the denial and frustration to exploration and acceptance. The more you lean into the change the faster you get through the process.

.

What I see happening is that some people get to the bottom end, the depression and the It’s not fair place and hang out there. Some people stay there . . . for years! Not a good place to live! The truth is, you can even bypass the bottom end of the loop and go from frustration directly to exploration, What can I do about this? or What is a another way?

.

If you think about it, almost every important thing in your life happened because something changed. Many of the changes we are excited about . . . getting married, having a baby, a new job, graduation, etc. Of course there are the other kinds of change, i.e. loss of job, or relationship, an unexpected move. Most all change can benefit us in some way, if we let it. It’s how we choose to think about it. I’m not saying it is easy or that we have to like it while it is happening, but it can be a learning experience or a time for growth. We can’t see it when we are in the middle of it, but our hindsight can show us the lessons.

Change

in our finances may be what shows us how to be better stewards
in where we live can open us up to new and beautiful relationships
in a job situation may be just the thing to push you into the career you’ve always wanted but were afraid to try
can get you out of the rut and into a new experience

.

There are the big life changes, but there are also the day-to-day changes, and if you look at them, your process is the same.. just quicker. For example, did your vacation get changed, or a meeting time and place? Someone cancelled on you. How did you react, get all mad and angry or go with the flow and regroup? There may be a time for both, but how we react in the small changes just might be an indication of how we respond to the big ones. Just saying.

.

I’ve learned to love change (I’ve moved 27 times, been up and down the financial ladder, had an intervention with a child, had 5 surgeries, +++)! I can tell you that when you go with it, not fight or resist it, and look for other options – it can become so much easier! It may even take a few big deep breaths, but you never know what may lie ahead.

Is Your Life a ‘Teeter -Totter’?

Some friends and I were talking about ‘Balance’. Have you ever felt like your life is out of balance, out of kilter (is that the right word?), or maybe you feel overwhelmed and out of control. Most of us know that feeling!

.

I think it is really about ‘harmony’. Balance assumes things are equal; work, home, recreation, spiritual. It can seem like a teeter-totter, up and down, up and down, to keep balance. When our lives get out of balance, it is because it’s hard to keep all of the areas equal, and let’s face it, there are times when balance just isn’t going to happen. Maybe it’s really about ‘harmony’.

.

In a band or an orchestra, depending on the movement or the music being played, sometimes the horns are louder, and then maybe the flute comes in, followed by the sweet tones of the piano. All together it makes for a beautiful song, with a little clash here and there, maybe big loud cymbals, and the relief of a harp or melodic violin line. The music can be beautiful… but not necessarily ‘balanced’.

In our orchestra of life, our days are filled with many ‘instruments, or choices. Maybe you have a job that you love and it is taking more than it’s equal share of your time, particularly if you are building your own business. Perhaps you are in the season of life where you children are taking most of your time, or an elderly parent, or you are dealing with an illness of someone you love. You know what it is in your life. We can still have harmony even when we don’t have balance.

.

There are times when ‘balance’ just isn’t going to happen. Harmony seems to be more realistic. When the areas of our lives are blended together for our ‘life’ orchestra, it can lead to wonderful music, just waiting for the next musical ‘movement’. We are in the middle of our ‘Concerto’, our ‘Symphony’. Hang in there, it’s not over yet. The best is yet to come!

Go Find Your YES . . .

I love the word YES! Don’t you? Whether it is YES to having lunch with a friend, to a sale, a new opportunity, new job, or a new adventure. YES is a Fun answer!

There is just one catch – (my very own quote =) . . .

“If you Don’t Ask . . . they Can’t Say YES!”

.

That’s right, you have to ask!

If you don’t call and invite a friend to lunch – they can’t say Yes.
If a guy doesn’t ask his girlfriend to marry him – she can’t say Yes.
If a child doesn’t ask for a puppy – the Mom or Dad can’t say Yes.
If you don’t ask for a raise – your boss can’t say Yes.
If you don’t ask for the sale – the client can’t say Yes.

We often are so afraid that the answer … to whatever the question… is going to be NO, that we don’t ask.

.

When I was a Director in Mary Kay, I found that many of the consultants were afraid to get a NO, because they felt that it was a personal rejection. Think about it like this. They are saying no to the opportunity or to the product. Often they are saying no because they don’t have enough information, they don’t understand the benefits, or because they don’t understand what is required. In most cases they are not saying no to you. They are not saying, I don’t like you… you did a bad job… or you are no good… all those crazy things we say to ourselves.

.

Recently at church I asked two ladies if they would like to help on a committee. They both said YES and thanked me for asking. Isn’t that cool?! What a blessing to me, and I think they are being blessed as well. They feel connected, making new friends, and seem to be enjoying it.

.

If you are afraid or hesitate to ask for what you want – Ask anyway . . . they might say YES! and actually thank you.

.

Ask – Go find your YESes!
