Don’t worry – Be happy! Remember that song, it’s kinda funky and fun. It’s makes you feel good just to listen to it, that beat and the whistles. Interestingly it is an a cappella song, no instruments. I guess I never really paid attention to that, just listened to it and enjoyed. (from Wikipedia The “instruments” in the a cappella song is entirely overdubbed voice parts and other sounds made by McFerrin, using no instruments at all.) Pretty cool, huh?
Fun, yes, but pretty profound too –
In every life we have some trouble
When you worry you make it double
Don’t worry, be happy
Or as the Bible says…
Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? (Matthew 6:27 Biblegateway)
This is a concept that many find really hard to live out. I think that sometimes we feel that if we ‘worry’ we are showing that we care, or we think ‘we’ can control it if we are ‘worrying’ about it. Both of these are an illusion.
Worry is negative energy that feeds on itself. The more we worry, the more worried and upset, and anxious we are. It can get so overwhelming that it’s easy to become paralyzed, and that is a totally non-productive and unpleasant place to be. So why do we do it? Good question.
Let’s look again –
[ Do Not Worry ] “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? … (Matthew 6:25-34)
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6)
It’s simple but not easy.
Take your eyes OFF the problem, turn to God who is in control
Speak positive things into your spirit, speak the Word
Look carefully and see what you can do to change the problem or situation, if there is nothing you can do about it then release it
Release the worry and anxiety
Put it on the back shelf of your brain, not front and center (It isn’t going to magically disappear, but it gets smaller when you ‘move’ it)
Think on the good things – be grateful
Or simply …
Don’t worry – Be happy
