Playing Church

I love to read all kinds of books. I like mysteries and detective books, and I also like self-help, inspirational, and faith-based books.

Recently a friend loaned me a book and I have to say it was quite thought-provoking and I loved it. The book is “Jesus > Religion” by Jefferson Bethke. He makes a lot of great points about ‘religion’ vs ‘relationship’. Some of his thoughts are regarding the ‘building’ of the church, and how we often confuse the ‘building’ for the ‘people’. He talks about how easy it is to slip into the mode of ‘playing church’, saying all the ‘proper’ things, but really not living the reality of Christ as our Savior. Sometimes we miss the point in our busy-ness of church, and forget the love and grace that is what we are really all about. Christian… being Christ-like. Jesus was and IS love.

It’s not about the Doing and Trying, but being close to Jesus and letting His love shine through us to others. Most of the time the people around us who are hurting don’t need us to preach to them, they need us to love and accept them. They don’t need us to spout off all the Bible verses, they need us to hold their hand, lend a shoulder, understand. Sometimes they need us to listen. Ahh, and isn’t that a novel thought. Listen to their words and listen to their heart.

Jefferson also mentions about how the world has caused us to be in our Christian box, and in many cases, we have allowed it and have become accustomed to it.

Next time we’ll talk about that. Thought until then is… Is there difference between a Christian Artist and an Artist who is Christian.

‘NON’ Coincidence

I am currently writing a new song with Brian K. He is an amazing drummer, has great ideas, and I love working with him. He and I wrote the Fun Fearless Female – WOW the WORLD theme song. The new song is God’s Miracles and the bridge, (or section in the middle for you non-musicians) says:

There no such thing as Coincidence,

No there’s no such thing as Coincidence,

I say there’s no such thing as Coincidence,

God is in charge of all!

You see, I just don’t believe in Coincidence. Here’s just one example. Let me I share a story with you. An amazing ‘Non Coincidence’ happened last week and it is such a God thing. Of course it started months ago, but I didn’t know it.

Last Spring while in KC, I ‘happen’ to run into my friend and former Pastor, Phil T., who has retired since we moved away and I hadn’t seen him in several years. We exchanged information, and he put me on his email list.

He sent me an email last week with a video and it touched my heart. As a matter of fact if you read my last post you know about that video, and if not, you can go back and read the post and watch it. It is about an amazing young woman, Jen Bricker. After watching it I kept thinking about her and her story, and I just had to find out more about her, so I googled her (if you want to know anything you ‘google’ it, right?).

I looked for her on FB and found her page and a twitter link. It said ‘send me a tweet’, so I did.

Let me say that Jen has been interviewed on several top shows, including Good Morning America, interviewed by Bryant Gumble, and a list of accomplishments… well… too long to post here.

She now lives in LA, which is just around the corner from Vegas, so I sent her a tweet. I explained that her story had really inspired me and I believe it could touch many others as well. I told her I’d love for her to join our FUN FEARLESS FEMALE – WOW the WORLD Conference in Las Vegas.

Now another ‘Non’Coincidence’… she answered and said she would love to talk about it….

We did.

AND…

SHE IS COMING!

I am so excited to see how God is going to continue to work, see what doors He opens, and what He has in store. He blew my mind with this one.

I truly believe that when we pay attention and are watching for Him, we will see so many ways that God is at work around us. The incredible thing is that He invites us to join Him. This has to be Him, because I would never have come up with this idea. . . It is His!

So watch out Las Vegas, God is moving, touching lives and I am excited to be a part. Won’t you join us?

Stop the Interruptions – or Not?

Sunday our Pastor shared a story about an interruption… and it turned out to be ministry in the truest sense of the word. A professor shared a thought with him while in Seminary, and it is so true. Like me, maybe you have heard it before, but it truly resonated with me this time. “Ministry happens in the interruptions”. An interruption can be an opportunity to serve.

Let’s think about it.

You are headed out of the house … the phone rings and someone has a need. Do we stop and listen? Do we call back?

You are in the middle of something, and an email comes through about someone needing help. Do we stop and pray, send a card?

You are on an airplane ready to read your book or listen to music, and the person next to you begins to share. Do we pay attention and ‘listen’ to their heart? Is it a God appointment?

I have been praying the Prayer of Jabez, that the Lord would bless me indeed, expand my territory, and expand my sphere of influence for Him. (1 Chronicles 4:10)

The thing is I need to pay attention, become more aware of the interruptions, and be more sensitive to His prompting. It may just be the blessings He has in mind.

These may be promptings in our spirits to stop and pray or to reach out to someone. Sometimes they interrupt our life, our schedule, our plans. Those interruptions may also be the blessing that God has for us. The gift that He has planned for you today.
