SPEAK EASY – Speak Your Way to Success

Public speaking is listed as American’s number-one fear, before death at number five, and loneliness, weighing in at number seven. Guess that means that most of us are less afraid of dying alone than of making fools of ourselves in front of others.

When you are asked to speak or introduce yourself do you get nervous? Sweaty palms? Do you feel like you want to throw up? I know that feeling!

Whether it’s a basic intro, your 1-minute at a networking event, a business presentation or prepare for a Ted-talk you can learn the skills to excel, be calm and confident.

As a little girl my Dad would always put me on the spot to sing for the family or friends. It made me feel awkward, uncomfortable and I didn’t know what to do. What am I supposed to sing (say)? Do they really want to hear me? Will they make fun of me? Is my Dad crazy?

Have you ever had those thoughts when you are put on the spot?

Through the years I’ve learned what to do, the tips and tricks to be comfortable, and own the stage. I want to share what I’ve learned with you so you can be calm and confident when someone asks you… So what do you do? or Tell me about yourself.

FEARLESS FRIDAY

I’m calling today – FEARLESS FRIDAY.

Being fearless doesn’t mean never having fear, it’s about what do we do with the fear. We each have fears. It could be fear of failure or fear of success (Yes there is that fear also).

A big one that I see all the time is the fear of not being Enough –

good enough
smart enough
have enough
do enough
have enough money for today
have enough money for the future
afraid of the economy
afraid they aren’t perfect
afraid they don’t measure up.

.

YIKES! That is a lot of Fear. We can’t handle all of that right now in this short time, so today, release one fear.

How about stop being afraid that you aren’t perfect . . . that is the easiest one. Really, I’m not kidding. Perfection is an illusion, and we can spend so much of our time trying to be perfect that we miss out on living. It is a mental release. How about thinking “I’m going to do my best and then move on”, then congratulate yourself.

.

Today enjoy each moment, do what you need to do. I’m not saying to not do your best, just it doesn’t have to be perfect. Take the pressure off.

Basically just do it, finish it, and move on. You don’t need to tweak it to death (and Yes that one is for me, I can tweak forever).

.

Whatever you are going to do this weekend, just do it, cook it, watch it, sew it, bake it, wash it… whatever… and realize that the doing is better than it having to be perfect.

.

You have permission to Not be perfect. SMILE!

Fear or Faith – Which will it be?

Fear is a funny thing. Most of the time we don’t even realize what is keeping us from our dreams or more joy in our life is fear.

.

Whether it is fear of failure, the fear of not being accepted, or the fear that we won’t be able to handle the success we crave, it can stop us from moving forward and keep us from our dreams. When we face our fears, we can begin to grow into the person we are created to be, own up to responsibility and take the power in our life.

.

Often when we face our fears we can step into that new job and believe that we are worth a higher pay scale, or the creative side of ourselves that we have been putting aside. It helps us become more confident, which affects our attitude, and the choices we make.

.

This confidence will overflow into our earning potential, our happiness in job and relationships, and the overall quality and productivity of our lives.

I love the quote “faith and fear cannot reside in the same place.” I don’t know who said it, but I believe it’s true. When we are walking in faith, believing that our God will take care of us, that He is our strength even when we aren’t sure of what’s ahead, then we don’t have room for fear. It is the faith that fills our heart and mind, and that keeps the fear out. We can move past the fear!

What are You Afraid of?

We often want to move forward, go for our dreams, and step out of our comfort zone.. BUT…

F.E.A.R steps in and sometimes takes over.

Some define it as False Evidence APPEARING Real. The key word is ‘Appearing’. Sometimes we don’t even know what it is we’re afraid of or maybe we just haven’t really looked at it.

Here are some common things that people FEAR…

Rejection
They won’t like me
I won’t be good enough
I won’t be successful
I’ll be so good, I won’t know how to handle it
I’ll have to be gone too much from my family
What if I don’t know how to do it
Being wrong
What will others think
What IF, what if, what if……..

We think about it, often obsess about it to the point we can’t see clearly. The Fear gets so big, so overwhelming it can paralyze us.

The truth is our lives won’t move forward, we won’t have the change we want until we are willing to face the fear and move through it. “Face the Fear and do it anyway.” We all have fear, in some form or other, at some time, what do we choose to do with it? Allow it to fuel us forward or stop us in our tracks.
